About the Course
History / Science grades 1 & 2

The first and second grade history/science class is a weekly, hour long class that covers both subjects.

For the science portion of class, we will loosely follow topics from the Answers in Genesis science curriculum used in 3rd – 6th grades. A weekly take home page will summarize the key idea of every lesson. These pages can be kept in a notebook as a learning portfolio or to use for review. In class, we will learn science basics and vocabulary through songs, chants, and games. I try to do fun, simple experiments whenever possible. Through those, we learn to use the scientific method.

If you would like to purchase books, we will follow some topics in the following texts:
Our Weather & Water  Properties of Atoms & Molecules  Heat & Energy The World of Plants

Any edition is fine and again,  purchase of the books is optional.

For history, we will study countries and cultures. As we travel around the world, we will learn fun facts about various countries and locate those countries on the map. We will also learn about historic time periods including Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Middle Ages. No text is required. I’ll send out an optional reading list of library books.

About JoAnna

I am incredibly excited to teach First and Second Grade Grammar and Writing this year! Students will enjoy the livelihood of this class, and the information they will learn will provide a solid foundation for future Grammar, Writing, and History courses.
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies from IU Southeast in 2002. I was an Admissions Counselor/Incoming Student Academic Advisor at IU Southeast for eight years, and then a Resource Specialist for the Institute for Learning and Teaching Excellence, a faculty development office, at IU Southeast for another two years, before deciding to stay at home to homeschool. I live in Lanesville with my husband and two daughters, and I absolutely love the joy and academic freedom that homeschooling has brought to our family.
