About the Course
Music is a powerful force, a universal language that crosses all cultural barriers. General music can be enjoyed by any student of any age and both jumpstarts and enhances private music lessons. The study of music has been shown to improve overall learning and test scores. Music education inspires creativity, and teaches children to listen well, as well as work as a team. It provides outlets for expressing our deepest emotions. Most amazingly, God asks us to use music to worship Him! Come join us as we learn music by doing music! Students taking this class again will work on more advanced skills. 3rd Graders may choose the K-3 class or the 3rd-6th class, depending on skills and experience.
The general music classes will teach children the language of music through many activities such as hand chants, rhythm band, bells, scarves, cups, lummi sticks, solfege reading, singing, listening, creating, and moving.
The students will:
Internalize beat through body percussion, rhythm instruments, and games
Study pieces of music by well-known composers, engaging in active listening through music maps and movement
Sing folk songs and children's songs, including singing games
Learn to sing on pitch
Learn about the instruments of the orchestra by sight and sound
Learn to read basic rhythms
Learn note intervals using solfege, a critical component of sight-reading
Learn the language of music, including dynamics, form, tempo, melody and harmony
Work in small groups to create their own rhythm compositions
I'm looking forward to an exciting year!

About Debbie
Hi! I'm Debbie Griffin and I love all things music! I graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in K-12 Music Education with a focus on general music, choral music, and piano pedagogy. I also did post-graduate studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where I met my husband Rick, who is a pastor. I've taught music in various capacities over the years, including piano, voice, general music and choirs in public and private schools, and I've directed both school and church productions. I really enjoy accompanying and assisting with worship. I'm a 25-year veteran homeschool mom of five children, all of whom have graduated, so I cheer on all of you homeschool moms!
