About the Course
Chess Class

Chess, one of the oldest and most popular board games, is played by two opponents on a checkered board with specially designed pieces of contrasting colors, commonly white and black. White moves first, after which the players alternate turns in accordance with fixed rules, each player attempting to force the opponent’s principal piece, the King, into checkmate—a position where it is unable to avoid capture.

Besides just being a fun game, studies have shown that playing chess helps unleash your originality and problem solving skills. Chess activates both the left and right side of the brain at the same time which creates a better concentration for other school classes, which in turn can raise a student's grades and IQ.

The class will involve the very basic fundamentals of chess all the way to advanced tactics in tricky chess positions. Class time will be one hour. The first 30 minutes students will learn new strategies, and then the last 30 minutes we will have fun applying them in chess games against each other. I will assign homework online through chess.com. The supply fee is for each student to have their own chess board, pieces, and a bag that they will use all year and then be able to keep. I will purchase the chess boards so they are all the same. The class is meant to be fun, and I think the students will love it :) .

About Joshua
Joshua

I am currently in 12th grade and have been playing chess since the age of six. I began playing competitively about 4 years ago and have competed in many tournaments. As a freshman, I won the individual KY high school state championship and as a sophomore and junior, my high school chess team took first in the state of Kentucky. I have lived in Jeffersonville, Indiana, all of my life, and am happy to be a Christian. I will be offering a chess class this year for 4th to 12th graders that I hope will be an excellent learning opportunity for students to train their minds and also to just have fun with the game of chess.
