About the Course

This class will be an introduction to language arts for young students. Activities will include poetry, picture study, oral narration and composition, recitation, and a gentle introduction to grammar including punctuation, parts of speech, etc. Students will be encouraged to prepare a recitation for class on a bi-weekly basis.
**It is NOT necessary for a child to be reading independently to take this class. Most of our work will be done orally so all can participate successfully. Most written tasks will be suggested as homework to complement the week's activities in class.
Assistance will be provided for students who are not yet fluent readers.
Possible homework will include poetry memorization, copy work, short story writing, and more.
The book we will be working from is Language Lessons for Today. This book is a guide for parents and not a workbook - it is not meant to be a consumable, so you could use it with additional children in the future or sell it at the end of the year.

You may wish to purchase some handwriting paper for use at home with copywriting activities and handwriting practice. This is not a requirement for class. I like the multisensory paper for new writers as it has raised lines to help students feel where to place letters, but the regular, smooth paper is fine also. Paper like this is often available at Target, Wal-Mart, etc when school supplies are displayed, but is not easily found in-store until then.

About Allison

Hello! I'm so happy to be returning with the teaching staff at Cornerstone this year.
Our family has been homeschooling for 6 years. Prior to staying home with our children, I was a kindergarten teacher for almost 10 years and in addition to teaching some of the youngest students in the school, I loved presenting professional development seminars in technology and literacy. In addition, I spent many summers teaching summer school enrichment courses, with hands-on science being some of my favorite classes. I have also taught classes in two other homeschool organizations in Kentuckiana in recent years.
I graduated from the University of Minnesota where I majored in Business, Communications, and Spanish, and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where I majored in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Development, and then obtained my National Board Certification in Elementary/Early Childhood teaching and leading.
Currently, our family lives in Clarksville and enjoys spending time gardening, biking, hiking, exploring the parks and nature preserves around us, and reading as much as we can - you'll always find me with a book or two in my bag. :)
I am looking forward to seeing everyone this fall!
